How to get the citizenship of Ukraine

According to the law of Ukraine citizens of other countries to obtain Ukrainian citizenship must renounce their previous citizenship of another state.

If You are not a citizen of Ukraine You have fewer rights and freedoms and duties on the territory of Ukraine, than the citizens of Ukraine.

Citizenship in Ukraine is regulated by such acts as the Constitution of Ukraine, Law "On citizenship of Ukraine" dated 18 January 2001. as amended by the Law of 16 June 2005, and "implementation Order for applications concerning the citizenship of Ukraine and implementation of decisions, approved by the decree of President of Ukraine from March 27, 2001. in the edition of the Decree of 27 June 2006. In article 4 of the Law "On citizenship of Ukraine" stipulates that the issue of citizenship are regulated by international treaties, and if these treaties establishes other rules than those contained in the Law "On citizenship of Ukraine", the rules of the international Treaty.

• certificate of citizenship of Ukraine;
• passport of citizen of Ukraine for travel abroad;
• temporary certificate of citizen of Ukraine;

Grounds for acquisition of citizenship of Ukraine is regulated by Art.6 of the Law "On citizenship of Ukraine".

1. Acquiring the citizenship of Ukraine by birth.
If You or Your parents live or lawfully resided in the territory of Ukraine, or were nationals of Ukraine at the time of birth, or were refugees and were granted refugee status, or any person found on the territory of Ukraine and whose parents are unknown.

2.  Acquiring the citizenship of Ukraine by territorial origin.
If You or Your close relatives in the ascending or descending line who were born or permanently resided until 24 August 1991 on the territory, which became the territory of modern Ukraine have the right to the citizenship of Ukraine. The person born on the territory of Ukraine after August 24, 1991, which is a foreign citizen or a stateless person, and which undertakes to renounce other citizenship.

3. The adoption of the citizenship of Ukraine.
A foreign citizen or the person without citizenship have the right to take the citizenship of Ukraine, previously renounced citizenship of other States.

The conditions for granting the citizenship of Ukraine

4. The renewal of the citizenship of Ukraine.

5. The acquisition of the citizenship of Ukraine as a result of adoption.

If the guardian or guardians of a child who is a foreigner or person without citizenship are citizens of Ukraine, or at least one of them has Ukrainian citizenship, the child has the right to become a citizen of Ukraine from the moment of entry into force of the court decision about the establishment of guardianship or trusteeship.

If the child was left without parents, has foreign citizenship or is a stateless person to become a citizen of Ukraine since the device in a children's home or a health care institution, the administration of which performs the functions of guardians with respect to a child.

If the child left without parents is a foreigner or a stateless person, brought up in a foster family, the foster family, family nurse educator, to become a citizen of Ukraine from the moment the device to a foster home, children's home of family type, family patronage, if at least one of their foster parents or foster parents is a citizen of Ukraine.

6. Establishment of guardianship over the person recognized by the court as incapable.  A foreign citizen or a stateless person residing on the territory of Ukraine on legal grounds, and which is recognized by the court as incapable, of which the guardian is a citizen of Ukraine to become a citizen of Ukraine from the moment of entry into force of the decision on guardianship.

7. The citizenship of Ukraine by a child in connection with the citizenship of Ukraine by his parents or one of them. If the child does not have citizenship or is a foreign citizen, with at least one parent is a citizen of Ukraine, is registered as a citizen of Ukraine at the request of the parent who is a citizen of Ukraine.

8. Due to the recognition of paternity or maternity, or the establishment of paternity or maternity;

9. on other grounds provided for by international treaties of Ukraine.

A citizen of Ukraine may be denied:

• Persons who have committed crimes against humanity, or genocide.
• Persons convicted in Ukraine for committing grave and especially grave crimes-to-maturity or expunging the criminal record.
• Persons who committed on the territory of another state grave or particularly grave crime under the laws of this state.
• Persons who lost citizenship of Ukraine due to fraud, providing false information about yourself, forged documents, etc.

Grounds for termination of citizenship of Ukraine

To terminate the citizenship of Ukraine is allowed in the following cases:

• If the person was released from the citizenship of Ukraine.
Permanently residing abroad, the citizen of Ukraine at the request has the right to renounce the citizenship of Ukraine.
If a child lives with parents abroad and at least one parent out of the citizenship of Ukraine, the child may renounce the citizenship of Ukraine at the request of the parent.

A child adopted by the spouses, may renounce the citizenship of Ukraine at the request of the adoptive parent, if one of the adoptive citizen of another state.

If the child citizenship acquired by birth, and parents are foreign citizens or stateless persons, to terminate the citizenship of Ukraine at the request of one of the parents regardless of the place of residence of the child.

If a citizen becomes a citizen of another state or acquired document confirming receipt of another nationality, if the will of the citizenship of Ukraine.

• Grounds for loss of citizenship of Ukraine.
A citizen of Ukraine has the right, upon reaching the age of majority to voluntarily acquire the nationality of another state.
